flying long distance and insurance 7 Years, 6 Months ago
My son has GBM 4. Has anyone with this condition been able to fly to america and get insurance. His treatment does not finish til july this yr and he is desperate to go back to florida.

Hi Janee

Not sure if any of this info will help you and your son because yours is a slightly different situation to mine.

I was diagnosed with a grade 2 brain tumour 4 years ago, and have been abroad several times since but only short haul to Europe. I seem to remember being told after my operations that it was ok to fly after a few months, when I did I felt no ill effects except a strange head feeling briefly during the flight. As far as going to the States I think that you may find the insurance more of an issue. Again I seem to remember( my memory is not so good these days!) that I would never get insurance for USA again due to their different Health care system and it being to much of a risk??? That's not to say that you need insurance to travel there but again its a risk that you would have to weigh up!! Saying this I really don't want to put you off and I really hope that somehow your son will be able to go. I am fortunate that America was one of the few places abroad that I ever wanted to go and was lucky enough to go twice before I was ill.

The other thing that the will definitely be against you in any travel insurance is that it is a recent diagnosis and he is still on undergoing treatment. The best insurance company I have found is Freespirit, but you will find that they all ask the same questions.

Best regards to you and your son

Bryn

thanks bryn,

will give free spirit a try. we were hoping to go in sept which would be a yr after diagnosis and his treatment is due to be completed at end of july this yr. I know that it may be harder to get insurance if any, iam even prepared to pay a huge premium if i have to. As his mum i will try to do everythin i can to get him there. Its a dream of his to go back. I thought this site would be the best place to ask.

Hi Jane

Its brilliant that you want to get your son back to the states, its so important that brain tumour survivors have long term goals and hope, its what keeps us going. So a big well done to you for that I really hope you can help him achieve his dream.

Take care

hi,jane

I had my gmb4 operation oct 09 and flew to america september 10.I tried about 10 companies none of who would qoute for insurance. I discussed this with my medical team who agreed i was in good health (well as good as its going to get)and prescribed me with steriods (only to be taken if i took bad ) and a letter for customs to carry them througth.
I was told they were not too concerned about me flying or going on rides (went to disney) just to keep out of the heat as much as possible and use factor 50 and a hat at all times. We just took our times with everything.hope everything goes well
